Tools for Leaders: Dialogue Wheel for Effective Conversations

It's not always easy to kick off a good conversation. Just as personal GAIS reports can be used as a tool for effective employee reviews, we've created the GAIS Dialogue Wheel to help you initiate productive discussions within your team.

How to Use the Dialogue Wheel

Print one Dialogue Wheel for each participant:

  1. Preparation: Individually reflect on the questions in the different sections of the Dialogue Wheel. Each person marks on the wheel the score they would give to each question.
  2. Dialogue: Engage in a group discussion about where the different marks are placed and why they are positioned there.
  3. Identify Strengths and Areas for Improvement: Not all factors are equally important for each individual or for the team as a whole. How things are going is one thing; assessing what's most important is another.
  4. Make Agreements: Agree on which areas for improvement you want to focus on. Make concrete agreements about what needs to change and how.
  5. Follow Up: Follow up on the agreements. Repeat the exercise after some time to see if there's positive development underway.
